With over 3,200 flowering plants and 250 species of bird, it’s unlikely you are going to run out of things to look at.
With a history running back well over 3,000 years, Sri Lanka is blessed with a material history that can be seen in the innumerable cities, shrines and temples which still exist. The most famous is Anuradhapura, one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the world and also one of Buddhists' most sacred sites. Capital of Sri Lanka between the 4th to the 11th centuries AD the monuments are testament to its power during its heyday. The hill fortress of Sigiriya, the ruins at Polonnaruwa with their complicated irrigation networks, and the more recent buildings of the Kingdom of Kandy all stand witness to the magnificence of Sri Lanka's past.
Sri Lanka has long been famous for its beaches - beautiful golden sands fringed by forests of palm trees. We can offer some wonderful resorts, many of which offer other activities. Its possible to arrange boat trips to go in search of dolphins and whales (December until April), diving and deep sea fishing.
In the hills of the interior there are opportunities for walking, whether that be doing gentle day walks while staying in a luxurious tea plantation house, or a more robust hike through the jungles of the interior in search of flora and birds.
The coast of Sri Lanka with its golden beaches, swaying palm trees, stilt fisherman and mangrove lined lagoons offer a fabulous family holiday. You’ve got forts to explore, educational elephant encounters to enjoy – children love the Born Free elephant sanctuary - along with many other activities like cycling, kayaking and visiting hill stations.The beach resorts around atmospheric Galle are perfect for down-time after exploring the riches of the cultural triangle. A real highlight is clambering up the steps and dodging monkeys at wonderful Dambulla and scaling the impressive Sigiriya Rock Fortress.
