China announces ban on ivory trade by end of 2017Published: 3rd January 2017

This new year there is great occasion to celebrate with news that China,  the world's biggest consumer when it comes to ivory has taken the decision to ban the ivory trade by the end of 2017. This historic move announced by the China State Council just before New Year, could be a game changer when it comes to the future of our elephants. Elephant populations in Africa have been hard hit in the last decade with more than a third being slaughtered for ivory.

The decision comes after CITES in South Africa in October - an international convention on the trade of endangered species.

31 March is the initial deadline for the commercial processing and sale of ivory to stop. Registerd traders will then be phased out.
