Black Rhino, Samburu and the Mara Kenya Safari

Our Explorers against Extinction campaign seeks to raise awareness about endangered species. Black rhino numbers have tragically dwindled to just 5,000 and this very special safari visits a not-for-profit community conservancy dedicated to bringing black rhino back to northern Kenya. You can track the black rhino on foot, learn about the conservation initiative in Sera and travel in the knowledge you are contributing to the conservation of this iconic species.

You also visit the wild and very beautiful Kalama Conservancy, Samburu, where herds of elephants browse the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River before flying to a private conservancy in the Masai Mara for a further three night safari.

A fantastic, unique three centre safari.

Your stay helps to fund the Sera Community Conservancy (established 2015) by the Northern Rangelands Trust and community. Sera Community Conservancy is a vast, untouched wilderness of more than 350,000 hectares, larger than Luxembourg and Hong Kong combined. It is the first community conservancy in Africa to own and operate a sanctuary dedicated to the conservation of the critically endangered black rhino. The sanctuary currently provides state-of-the-art protection for 11 black rhinos relocated from Lewa Conservancy, Nakuru National Park and other areas. This move sees the rhino back in its natural habitat in northern Kenya after 30 years. The Real Africa Trust fosters a Sheldrick elephant orphan on behalf of all clients visiting Kenya on safari. Please let us know if you would like to visit your orphan during your trip so we can make necessary arrangements.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 2

Samburu
Today you will fly from Nairobi Wilson Airport to the Kalama Airstrip just north of the Samburu National Reserve. On the way from the airstrip to Saruni Samburu you will have the chance to look for the 'Special Five' - Grevy's Zebra, Reticulated Giraffe, Somali Ostrich, Beisa Oryx and Gerenuk. Spend your days exploring the wonderful wildlife of Kalama and Samburu, guided by Samburu warriors. Samburu is home to a plethora of wildlife including huge herds of elephants and beautiful big cats.

DAY 3 - 4

Sera Community Conservancy
Today you will be driven north to Sera. During your two night stay you can track black rhino on foot, accompanied by an expert Saruni guide and a highly-trained Sera Community Conservancy ranger, equipped with a transmitter correlating to the GPS whereabouts of the 11 rhinos throughout the 54,000 hectares-large sanctuary. The vast rhino sanctuary has been fenced in what is one of the most advanced conservation projects in Kenya. Operational only throughout certain hours of the day for maximum protection, the use of the transmitter allows the team to game drive guests to a tracking distance away from the nearest rhino, leaving the vehicle and continuing on foot (very lightly to not give away our presence) to metres from the grazing rhino. Sera is also home to The Fifty Wells, ‘Kisima Hamsini’, a series of (50!) springs where local pastoralists take their livestock to water, digging up water from the wells to fill up holders and troughs. The Singing Wells can be visited with some notice – a rare treat to see the local community singing proprietary songs recognisable only by their own cattle, to encourage them to come to the wells to drink. In addition, guests can pay a visit to the recently opened The Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy located in the remote Mathews Range nearby, providing protection for orphaned and abandoned elephant calves with an aim to release them back into the wild herds adjoining the Sanctuary.

DAY 5-7

Mara North Conservancy
This morning you will be transferred back to Kalama airstrip for your flight to Mara North Conservancy, a beautiful private wilderness area of more than 30000 hectares, bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve in the south of Kenya. The conservancy is a partnership between eleven member camps and over 800 Maasai landowners. The aim is to create a best practice, world-class conservancy with long-term commitments to the environment, wildlife, and local communities. You have three nights staying at either Saruni Mara or Saruni Wild with the most fabulous wildlife on your doorstep.
