Golden Africa: Botswana Mobile Safari

A fabulous, high quality small group mobile safari in Botswana with Golden Africa allowing you to get one step closer to Botswana's incredible pristine wilderness. A mobile safari is a go-anywhere, see-anything, experience-all way to travel. Golden Africa's exclusive camps offer furnished tents, en-suite bathrooms, a private chef, camp staff, custom vehicles and of course, an expert guide.

Guests spend 3 nights in Khwai , a community run concession in NE Okavango in the area between Moremi and Chobe. Khwai offers varying habitats from riverine woodland, open savannah and mopane scrub to leadwood thickets and an excellent opportunity to see large herds and predators, particularly as the dry season progresses. Activities in this region are varied with game drives, walking and night drives with a flashlight also possible. Guests then enjoy 2 nights on Xobega Island in the Okavango, perfect for walking safaris and motor boat exploration of the Delta. This offers an entirely different perspective of the Okavango, being excellent for birdlife and the shyer inhabitants of the Delta. The last 3 nights is spent in the wildlife rich Moremi Game Reserve on the eastern edge of the Okavango Delta. Wild dogs are known to den both here and in Khwai, giving guests an excellent chance of observing a range of large predators from dogs to leopard, as well as all the supporting cast from elephant, zebra and antelope to buffalo. The only tricky animal to see here tends to be rhino although thanks to the rhino translocation project, rhino are now back in the Moremi Game Reserve after a long absence.

Real Africa works with both Save the Elephants and Save the Rhino International who are both active in Botswana. In addition Golden Africa supports the work of the Botswana Predator Conservation Trust, based in Maun. The BPCT studies and supports a number of predator projects including wild dogs. Monitoring programmes means that guides often know where the wild dog dens are giving every opportunity to observe them in both Khwai and Moremi. Their association with BPCT also means they have additional knowledge about the predators and their progress in this area.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1-3

Arrive Maun. Fly to Khwai
On arrival at Maun collect your luggage and clear customs. You will then fly from Maun to Khwai airstrip followed by a game drive to camp. Khwai is a community run concession on the northern shore of the River Khwai, in a prime wildlife area between Chobe and the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta. Due to the diverse range of habitats in this area, a great variety of flora and fauna can be found. Over the next 3 nights you will enjoy the thrill of safari at this exclusive private camp in the heart of the wilderness enjoying game drives in custom open sided 4x4 vehicles both during the day and at night, with a flashlight, a perfect time for catching up with the ambush predators like leopard. As well as an expert driver/guide, you will also be looked after by dedicated camp staff which include a chef, waiters, tent attendants and camp hands. Meals are served in a large open sided dining tent or guests may choose to sit by the bush fire for breakfast. Food and wine is of excellent quality and variety. Large guest tents include stand-alone beds - ¾ singles or super king double beds with high-quality bedding as well as hanging storage space. There is a fully enclosed private en-suite bathroom and comfortable chairs for relaxation. Mornings usually start with a gentle wake up call before sunrise and steaming hot tea or coffee by the fire while you plan the morning with your guide. Every safari is led by an experienced, professional safari guide in custom, open sided spacious 4x4 safari vehicles. The dry season of July to October brings many elephants down to the river, often numbering in the hundreds, whilst buffalo are often found almost always being tracked by the many lions in the area. Due to the large numbers of impala found in Khwai, the leopard and wild dog populations is excellent, and rarely does a safari in the area not encounter at least one of these on a game-drive. Occasionally there are roan and sable antelope that come down through the mopane woodland towards the river, for a drink.

DAY 4-5

Xobega Island Lodge, The Okavango
Today you game drive into the Okavango to Xakanaxa boat station. Here you transfer to Xobega Island Lodge, on a small island in the Okavango, for the next 2 nights. From Xobega Island Lodge you explore the Delta's numerous channels in motor boats, and depending on the water levels walking is also usually a possibility. The lagoons support substantial heronries, reputedly the largest breeding sites for Marabou and Yellow-billed Storks in southern Africa and boating excursions through the channels present fantastic opportunities for observing the magnificent birdlife, like Pel's Fishing Owl, and other wildlife in Africa's greatest wetland. The lagoons around Xobega are also known to be hippo hot spots so for those keen to try out their skills in a mokoro (dug out canoe) they will be pleased to hear there is an option of a full day excursion with picnic lunch on Day 5 to another area, well away from the hippos!

DAY 6-8

Moremi Mobile, Moremi Game Reserve
Today you return to Xakanaxa boat station where you will then game drive to Golden Africa's Moremi Mobile in the Moremi Game Reserve itself. You will be based here for the next 3 nights.
