Malawi Conservation Safari

Visit 3 different wildlife reserves in Malawi - each one has undergone a significant transformation in recent years to be able to offer wonderful wildlife viewing once again. The conservation work done by African Parks in partnership with the local government and community is complex and fascinating and has helped to restore these beautiful wild areas after they were ravaged by poaching.

A massive translocation of 500 elephants is just one of the projects undergone recently in Malawi's national parks.

As well as twice daily game drives with your expert guides you can also enjoy walking safaris, community visits and water based activities.

If of interest, you will also have the chance to learn about and see firsthand, the vital conservation work being done by African Parks.

The Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects. Partners include Save the Elephants, Save the Rhino, The Sheldrick Trust, Rhino Conservation Botswana, Animals saving Animals and African Parks. You can find out more on our Conservation pages. On behalf of every client travelling, Real Africa makes a donation to the Trust. Our aim is to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and to promote sustainable, socially responsible travel which benefits the wildlife and communities you choose to visit. African Parks are a non-profit organisation who run Majete, Liwonde and Nkhotakota parks in Malawi. They have done an incredible job turning these parks from barren wildernesses into thriving wildlife reserves. Their work to restore the wildlife and habitats means that now you can find the Big Five in Majete, abundant birdlife and rare species such as the black rhino across Malawi. They have also been involved in huge projects such as the elephant translocation programme and thanks to them Malawi has now become a beacon in wildlife conservation.

DAY 1 - 3

Majete Wildlife Reserve
On arrival at Blantyre Chileka International Airport you will meet your experienced English speaking driver/guide and be transferred to Majete Wildlife Reserve which is situated in the lower Shire valley in the South West of Malawi. Majete Wildlife Reserve offers a year-round wildlife experience and each season offers something unique. More than 4,000 animals have been reintroduced into the park, including elephant, black rhino, buffalo, zebra, sable antelope, eland, waterbuck, nyala, hartebeest, kudu and many more species. Standing beside the Shire River in the south west of Malawi, this area of the Great Rift Valley is characterised by sculpted miombo woodland undulating across the hills, which in turn overlook stunning river valleys and riverine forest. Depending on your arrival time you will enjoy lunch looking out over the Shire River or if you arrive in the afternoon, you can enjoy afternoon tea. Afternoon tea, is followed by your first late afternoon/evening game drive. You spend the next couple of days game viewing or enjoying the other activities available including boating safaris, bush walks, hiking Majete Hill, black rhino tracking, cultural tours, birding trips on the Shire River and to nearby Elephant Marsh.

DAY 4 - 6

Liwonde National Park
After breakfast check out and transfer by road to Liwonde. Liwonde National Park is in southern Malawi, southeast of the capital, Lilongwe. It runs alongside the Shire River and part of Lake Malombe. Rough tracks and footpaths offer views of wildlife such as elephants, hippos and endangered black rhinos. River, grassland and woodland habitats are home to crocodiles, leopards and antelopes. Rich birdlife includes rare species like Pel’s fishing owls and Lilian’s lovebirds. The unspoiled Liwonde National Park promises an ultimate retreat where you can experience the many activities on offer with complete privacy; from adventurous day and night game drives and walking safaris to tranquil boat cruises along the grand Shire River (emerald season only).

DAY 7 - 10

Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve
This morning after breakfast you will transfer by road to your next destination, the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve which lies in the east of the country, 30km west of Lake Malawi. The reserve is Malawi’s oldest and least-developed protected area. It is also the largest at 700 square miles, stretching from the Great Rift Valley in the west to just short of the beautiful Lake Malawi in the east. Made up of rugged terrain and crossed by a number of rivers, most of the reserve is miombo woodland with vast patches of tall grasses and occasional lush areas of rainforest. It is possibly Malawi’s last truly unexploited wildlife areas and attracts those who wish to experience a true wilderness. The wildlife is as good as to be expected in Malawi and the untouched and rugged nature of the reserve makes wildlife viewing particularly rewarding. Birdlife is exceptional; with over 280 species identified, Birdlife International has rated it an ‘area of special interest’. Elephant, antelope, monkeys and other wildlife are often seen and although rarely seen lion, leopard and buffalo are also known to inhabit this unspoilt and stunning area of wilderness.
