Malawi Highlights - Safari and Beach

This one week holiday is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a safari to Liwonde National Park where you will stay in a lovely safari camp on the banks of the Shire River and do twice daily game drives with your expert guides. There is plenty of big game to see in Malawi including elephant, black rhino, zebra, and leopards as well as spectacular bird life. You then move on to the heavenly Pumulani which offers guests the chance to relax on pristine white sandy beaches or if you are feeling more active you can do scuba diving, swimming, sailing, fishing or other watersports in the crystal clear warm waters of Lake Malawi.

The Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects. Partners include Save the Elephants, Save the Rhino, The Sheldrick Trust, Rhino Conservation Botswana and Animals saving Animals. You can find out more on our Conservation pages. On behalf of every client travelling, Real Africa makes a donation to the Trust. Our aim is to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and to promote sustainable, socially responsible travel which benefits the wildlife and communities you choose to visit. African Parks are a non-profit organisation who run Majete, Liwonde and Nkhotakota parks in Malawi. They have done an incredible job turning these parks from barren wildernesses into thriving wildlife reserves. Their work to restore the wildlife and habitats means that now you can find the Big Five in Majete, abundant birdlife and rare species such as the black rhino across Malawi. They have also been involved in huge projects such as the elephant translocation programme and thanks to them Malawi has now become a beacon in wildlife conservation.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 3

Liwonde National Park
On arrival at Blantyre International Airport you will be met and transferred to your safari camp. Depending on your arrival time in the day you will enjoy lunch looking out over the Shire River or if you arrive in the afternoon, you will have afternoon tea and then you will enjoy your evening game drive. Liwonde National Park is in southern Malawi, southeast of the capital, Lilongwe. It runs alongside the Shire River and part of Lake Malombe. Rough tracks and footpaths offer views of wildlife such as elephants, hippos and endangered black rhinos. River, grassland and woodland habitats are home to crocodiles, leopards and antelopes. Rich birdlife includes rare species like Pel’s fishing owls and Lilian’s lovebirds. The unspoiled Liwonde National Park promises an ultimate retreat where you can experience the many activities on offer with complete privacy; from adventurous day and night game drives and walking safaris to tranquil boat cruises along the grand Shire River (emerald season only).

DAY 4 - 7

Lake Malawi
Following breakfast you transfer on a scenic drive north. You reach the Nankumba Peninsula of Lake Malawi mid-afternoon. Malawi's most impressive feature is Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa and 20% of the surface of Malawi. Lake Malawi is a World Heritage site and offers a larger variety of freshwater fish species than all of Europe and North America combined, and offers some of the best freshwater scuba diving in the world. Guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities at Pumulani on Lake Malawi, whether it's snorkelling or kayaking, or just relaxing on the beach. For visitors wanting to do something active on their Malawi vacation, waterskiing, sailing, diving, snorkelling, fishing, wakeboarding, kayaking and bird watching are some of the activities available (all motorised activities are for own account). Visitors can also enjoy a sunset cruise on Pumulani's traditional wooden dhow, hand built by local craftsmen. Pumulani offers guests the unique experience of enjoying a guided walk through the local villages.

DAY 8

After an early morning breakfast check out. You will then be transferred approximately 3 hours to Lilongwe Kamuzu International Airport where you will arrive in time to check-in for your onward flight.
