Myanmar - Family Adventure

This is an adventurous trip for those looking to go somewhere new and off the beaten track in Asia. Myanmar formerly known as Burma is just starting to open up to tourism but is still very unspoilt and for the most part has remained unchanged for centuries. This holiday takes you on a classic tour of the highlights of this intriguing and spiritual country.

You start your journey in Myanmar’s religious centre, Mandalay where you will take a tour in a classic Mandalay ‘sidecar’ (a chauffeur-pedalled bicycle with a passenger seat). You will then fly to Bagan, formerly Pagan: the capital of the ancient Pagan Kingdom. Here you get to cycle through Bagan’s pagodas and temples which date back to the 11th and 13th Centuries. (NB: You can also book a wonderful balloon trip at Bagan which is a fabulous way to see the numerous temples that spread across the plain below you; prices from £295pp - bookable in advance)

On this tour you will also get to take a tour to Green Hill Valley Elephant camp at Kalaw to watch the elephants feeding and bathing and learn all about their conservation efforts.

You also get to relax and experience life on and around the scenic and serene Inle Lake including visiting nearby traditional fishing villages. Your journey ends in Yangon and includes a visit to famous Shwedagon Pagoda with its glorious golden stupa which is the 'heart' for all Buddhists in Myanmar.

On this tour you will also get to take a tour to Green Hill Valley Elephant camp to watch the elephants feeding and bathing and learn all about their conservation efforts. Conservation is gradually gaining more importance in Myanmar and projects like these prove that conservation can bring in much needed tourist income to poorer areas.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 2

On arrival you will be met at Mandalay International Airport. You then start your tour by visiting picturesque Sagaing, perhaps the living centre of Buddhist faith in Myanmar today. The hills here are dotted with numerous pagodas and monasteries. The following day you go for a touring ride in a classic Mandalay ‘sidecar’ (a chauffeur-pedalled bicycle with a passenger seat). You then head off on a comprehensive tour of Mandalay, a highlight of which is the Mahamuni Pagoda, home to a spectacular Buddha image covered with thick layers of gold leaves. Visit Kuthodaw Pagoda, where the Theravada Buddhist scriptures are inscribed on 729 marble slabs, giving rise to its nickname 'the world’s largest book'. Next visit beautiful teak-carved Shwenandaw Monastery, the only Royal Palace building to survive World War II bombing.

DAY 3 - 4

This morning you will fly to Bagan from where you tour the city with visits to a diverse selection of the most important pagodas and temples in Bagan. These include the Shwezigon Pagoda, and Gubyaukgyi (Wetkyi-Inn). Continue to the eminent Ananda Temple; one of the finest and largest pagodas. The next day you will begin your cycle ride on a sandy track near Ananda Temple (½ Km). Your first stop is at Dhammayangyi (¼ Km), a massive temple dating from 1170 which is visible for kilometres around. Stop at Phwa Saw, a quintessentially Myanmar village of rattan houses, busy with bullock carts, zebu cattle and local craft industries. Arrive at Sulamani (2 Km) one of Bagan’s most attractively constructed temples famous for its ornamental work and interior frescoes. Sightseeing continues with visits to Manuha Temple, built in Mon style in 1059; Nanpaya Temple, a unique sandstone monument that is said to have been the palace of King Manuha; and Gubyaukgyi (Myingaba) under the protection of UNESCO because of its ancient mural paintings.

DAY 5 - 6

This morning you will fly to Heho and then drive to Kalaw through the hills to Magwe and the Green Hill Valley Elephant camp. Here you will watch the elephants feeding and bathing and learn all about their conservation efforts. Walk back to the camp lodge and enjoy a delicious lunch, with a view of the valley and the opportunity to see butterflies, birds and orchids. The following day you will enjoy a half day hike to Myinmahti, an ethnic Danu village, through the pine forest, which opens out after to 1 hour to potato farms, mountain rice paddies and huge vegetable plantations. Continue to the Myinmahti limestone cave (312 metres deep from entrance to exit).
