North and South Luangwa Walking Safari Tour

This is one for real wildlife enthusiasts with fantastic opportunities to walk in the Zambia bush and see big game on foot. You get the chance to explore both North and South Luangwa with expert guides enabling you to get the most out of this trip as they share their knowledge and tracking expertise.
You stay in a varitey of seasonal, rustic safari camps with comfortable en-suite tents and great game viewing from the camps with their riverside locations giving you a great vantage point over bathing hippos, elephants and other game.

The Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects. Partners include Save the Elephants, Save the Rhino, The Sheldrick Trust, Rhino Conservation Botswana and Animals saving Animals. You can find out more on our Conservation pages. On behalf of every client travelling, Real Africa makes a donation to the Trust. Our aim is to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and to promote sustainable, socially responsible travel which benefits the wildlife and communities you choose to visit. Robin Pope shares our mind-set and is involved directly in a number of projects in Zambia which include working with four schools in the Luangwa area that benefit the communities in which they operate, the Luangwa Safari Association Medical Fund, founded by Robin Pope Safaris that contributes to the upkeep of the main local clinic in Mfuwe and the Zambian Carnivore Programme which works to conserve large carnivore species.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 2

South Luangwa National Park
On arrival in Lusaka you will transfer to the flight to Mfuwe. On arrival at the airstrip you will be met and transferred to the camp. Luangwa River Camp borders the world-renowned South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, which marks the end of the Great Rift Valley. It is one of the world’s last unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. The small size of the lodge means there is a lot of flexibility as regards game viewing activities. Guests can enjoy game drives and walking safaris ranging from half day excursions to full day activities with a bush lunch to allow access into different areas of the national park. The park is accessed by crossing the Luangwa River either by boat when the waters are high or by 4WDs in drier season.

DAY 3 - 4

South Luangwa National Park
After an early breakfast, a game drive through the park takes you into the Nsefu Sector, which is recognised as a phenomenal game view area. On arrival at Tena Tena Camp you will enjoy lunch. Tena Tena is only open for the dry season. The camp is set in a grove of trees and bushes so you can hardly see the tents as you walk to the main area – a large marquee style tent. The view was across an unusually wide stretch of the Luangwa and you can see the hills past Nkwali – some 60kms away. Guests can enjoy superb game watching at the busy waterhole in front of the tents. Another highlight at Tena Tena is romantic dinners served under the stars on the deck.

DAY 5 - 7

North Luangwa
Today you will fly from Mfuwe to Mwaleshi. On arrival at Mwaleshi Airstrip you will be met by a representative of Mwaleshi Camp and will be transferred to camp. North Luangwa National Park is in north-eastern Zambia near the Tanzanian border. The park is located in the mid to upper Luangwa Valley, along the western bank of the Luangwa River and is an untouched savannah wilderness visited by less than 500 tourists each year. Located in the oldest section of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, the 1,790-square-mile (4,636-square-kilometer) park has no roads and no permanent camps. September to October is the height of the dry season, when wildlife concentrates near the Luangwa River. Guided walking safaris on existing animal trails are the only way to see the residents, which include buffalo, elephants, lions, leopards, Africa’s greatest concentration of hippos, and over 400 species of birds.
