Opulent Cape and Safari

This is a truly gorgeous luxury self-drive holiday where you will not only see the best of this beautiful country but stay in some of the best luxury hotels too.

You start in vibrant Cape Town at the Silo, a stylish modern property right on the Waterfront and above the Musuem of Contemporary African Art. After a few days to explore the city you move on to the Cape Winelands and La Residence. This haven of peace and quiet is a nice contrast as the pace of life is slower. If you can tear yourself away from the pool and the stunning views, Franschhoek is on the doorstep as are many fabulous vineyards and restaurants.

(Both properties are part of the Royal Portfolio collection and are set to feature on BBC2 series 'Amazing Hotels - Life Beyond the Lobby'.)

You then head off to your next destination back on the coast and the start of the world famous Garden Route - Hermanus. Here you stay at another of the Royal Portfolio properties, the wonderful Birkenhead House Hotel. If you come during September/October then you have a good chance of spotting whales from the hotel. The rest of the year its a delightful coastal town with lots to see and do as well as beautiful beaches for strolling along. The coast along here is teeming with marine life including dolphins all year round.

Finally you will head off on a luxury safari from the Royal Malewane in the ThornyBush Reserve in the Greater Kruger. This is a stunning safari lodge with luxury rooms, an award winning spa and lovely swimming pool and fine dining out in the bush. You will go on twice daily game drives with their rangers who will help you look for the Big Five and the other spectacular wildlife in this area.

We recommend travelling in May when the prices are at their lowest. This is autumn in the Cape with sunny crisp days and cooler nights. It is an excellent time to go as everywhere is much quieter and the leaf colour in the Cape Winelands is just stunning! It's also an excellent time to go on safari in the Kruger where it is very pleasant indeed for those who like it not too hot.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 3

Cape Town
On your arrival at Cape Town International Airport our representative will meet you ‘Airside’, and will assist you with passport control, luggage collection and customs clearance. You will then be transferred by road to The Silo Hotel. Located in the heart of Cape Town, the Silo is a chic waterside hotel - and one of Cape Town's newest five star icons. Formerly an industrial grain silo from the 1920s, the hotel has been refurbished and split into two parts - the elevator tower where The Silo Hotel is located which once facilitated the mechanical bulk handling of the grain - and the actual storage silos themselves. Easily recognisable by its unusual pillow windows that overlook the city and the V&A Waterfront, the Silo Hotel offers one of the best locations in the city centre.

DAY 4 - 5

Cape Winelands
This morning after breakfast your hire car will be delivered to The Silo for you. Check out and enjoy the stunning scenery as you self-drive from Cape Town to the picturesque Cape winelands, just over an hour from the city. Franschhoek is widely regarded as the prettiest village in the winelands with rolling vineyards and orchards, rugged mountains and lots of Cape Dutch architecture. Spend the morning exploring the wider area before checking in that afternoon at your country hotel, La Residence. If you can tear yourself away over the next few days there is much to enjoy - the historic wine estates of Franschhoek, Stellenbosch and Paarl, wonderful cafes and restaurants and small individual shops, museums and galleries.

DAY 6 - 7

After breakfast, check-out. Continue with a leisurely self-drive to the seaside town of Hermanus. Hermanus is a town on the southern coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is famous for southern right whale watching during the southern winter and spring. The whales can be seen from the cliffs in the town centre as early as June and usually depart in early-December. It is also a great base to explore along this part of the Garden Route coastline. The town itself is small but lively with plenty to do including a whale musuem and plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. Mind you the hotel is so wonderul with such incredible sea views that you might never be tempted to leave it! On arrival at Birkenhead House Hotel, check-in and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
