Pemba Lodge - Beach Week

Pemba Lodge is hidden away on a tiny island just off Pemba which is itself a small island tucked off the coast of Zanzibar.

Pemba Lodge is the very definition of a tropical hideaway. It is perfect if you want to relax in splendid isolation on a gorgeous white sandy beach or if you want to enjoy the unspoilt nature of this quiet little Indian Ocean island. Having just 5 comfortable bungalows, you will find the ultimate privacy and serenity at Pemba Lodge, making it also ideal for a very romantic honeymoon destination.

Pemba Lodge is owned and managed by Nassor, a local from Pemba. Nassor was inspired to develop a true eco-lodge in his homeland Pemba, following a responsible tourism philosophy which conserves the natural environment as well as gives local people opportunities, to ultimately create a satisfying and authentic experience for visitors enjoying this unique and unexplored part of the world. His was the first eco-lodge on Pemba.

At Pemba Lodge a maximum of ten guests will be on the island at any period of time creating a feeling of solitude and calm in which you will be able to relax completely away from the stress, noise and pressure of normal life. There is a space of 35 – 40 metres between the bungalows to ensure privacy and all face the aquamarine Indian Ocean next to the powdery white beach. Each bungalow at Pemba Lodge has been built on stilts 1 metre off the ground to keep it cool and to capture the gentle Pemba breezes from the monsoon winds.

The open central restaurant is furnished with dining chairs, tables and sofas created from reclaimed dhow and ngalawas boats retrieved from retired fishermen and a variety of harbours around the island.

Activities include stargazing, sailing, snorkelling, birdwatching, fishing and diving.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 7

Shamiani Island
On arrival at Zanzibar International Airport you will take the short flight to Pemba Island airstrip. On arrival at Pemba Airstrip, you will be met by our representative and enjoy a 45-minute scenic drive through the lush countryside to Kengeja, a small port in the south-east of the island, where the Pemba Lodge team will be waiting for you to board the boat. The 30-minute traditional boat trip, (with out-board engine) to Shamiani Island will also allow the captain, the chance to sail up to local fishermen and buy some of their fresh catch for dinner. Depending on the tides, it’s then a 10–20-minute walk through farmland to the lodge itself (a pair of sturdy walking shoes/trainers are advised as some of the walk is over stony ground). If the tide is in, the boat can sail on to the beach near the lodge. At Spring tide this walk may be a little longer. Don’t be put off by the thought of this journey – you’re reward is a truly beautiful stretch of beach with powder-white sand. You may, however, wish to experience the lodge’s ‘new’ mode of transport - the traditional ‘Ox and cart’ from the local harbour at Dongoni takes the farm track to the Lodge. You will spend the next week relaxing in this tiny little place with its sandy beaches and total peace and quiet.
