Southern Serengeti Fly-in - Migration Explorer

From January to March the Great Migration can be found on the southern plains of the Serengeti around Ndutu and within the Ngorongoro Conservation area. It is here that the wildebeest calve, usually within a 3 week period commencing in late January, with around 8,000 individuals being born every day. In turn, the predators gather, hoping for an easy meal. This area of the Serengeti hosts the densest concentration of predators in Africa at this time of year - from lion and cheetah to leopard and hyena.

Here we offer a selection of camps/lodges perfectly positioned to witness one of nature's great spectacles. It would be unrealistic to say you can get 'off the beaten track' at this time of year, but by staying in one of these camp you have more chance of getting close to the migration and spending your safari time with the herds at this time of year.

On behalf of every client travelling the the Real Africa Trust makes a donation to one of its nominated projects. Conservation partners include Save the Elephants and Save the Rhino International - you can find out more about our partnerships on the conservation pages. Sanctuary Kusini with the help of its guests is actively involved with the Serengeti Cheetah Project which helps monitor the demographics of the cheetah in the area - one of the last few remaining natural ecosystems where cheetah exist in viable numbers so if you select this lodge, you will be able to participate in the project yourself.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrive Tanzania
On arrival at Kilimanjaro airport you will be met and transferred to the lovely Mt Meru Game Lodge so you can relax and recover from your international flight.

DAY 2-6

The Serengeti
This morning you will fly from Arusha to the Serengeti Ndutu airstrip. From here you enjoy a game drive to your chosen camp. We have a number of camps and lodges in this exciting area of the southern Serengeti, perfectly positioned to give you a terrific experience of the wildebeest migration. Please see the pricing section for details of three of these: Sanctuary Kusini, Serengeti Pioneer Camp and Lemala Ndutu Camp. The 14,763 square kilometres of the Serengeti are probably most famous for being home for the majority of the year to the Great Migration when 1.5 million animals, mostly wildebeest but also zebra and Thompson's gazelle, follow their instincts to make a 1000 kilometre journey from the Serengeti's southern plains to the fresh grazing of the Masai Mara. This is one of the earth's great sights and between January to March the migration can be found on the southern plains where the animals are giving birth to their young before heading north. The vast, flat plains, made fertile by the ashes of the volcanoes of the Ngorongoro highlands, are places of huge skies, of shimmering heat hazes, yet also of delicate wild flowers blooming after the rains. The savannah, sprinkled with Acacia Tortilis, has majestic termite mounds and rock formations called kopjes which make great vantage points for predators - lion is abundant, leopard are plentiful (yet still secretive) and black rhino and cheetah both breed here. There are more than 500 species of bird and, interestingly, 100 sub-species of dung beetle - a sign of a varied animal population! Ndutu, in the south, has small lakes where you may see hippo and water birds.

DAY 7

Return to Arusha
Following breakfast you will enjoy one final game drive to the airstrip where you will arrive in time for your flight to Arusha. On arrival at Arusha Airport our representative will meet you and will transfer you to Mount Meru Game Lodge where you will arrive in time for lunch. A day room will also be waiting for you enabling you to freshen up before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport later in the day.
