Ultimate Kenya

If you are looking for a superb luxury safari experience in Kenya then this combination of contrasting camps and lodges, hand-picked by the team, is hard to top.

From a cliff-top architect designed villa property in Samburu to a romantic tented camp in a private conservancy in the Masai Mara you will stay in beautiful properties in prime wildlife areas and be guided by expert local guides. You will have the opportunity to see how the face of safari has changed in Kenya over the years, staying at an historic family property, Lewa Wilderness. The Craig family has transformed Lewa from a cattle ranch to a not-for-profit wildlife conservancy and they now undertake vital conservation work with their community partners.

This like all our safaris is merely a suggestion for your holiday so please do get in touch if you have a specific 'Ultimate Kenya' safari in mind with a different combination of lodges so we can prepare a tailor-made itinerary for you.

The Real Africa Trust supports a number of important charities and projects in Kenya - you will visit some of these during your trip, such as the Sheldrick Trust in Nairobi which has rehabilitated many elephant orphans back to the wild. In addition all the lodges in this Ultimate itinerary have been hand-picked and offer the best in low density sustainable tourism. The Emakoko partners with the Kenya Wildlife Service, the Kitengela Landowners Association and the local community - projects include the ‘lion lighting scheme’ which is one way in which predators have been deterred from attacking the community Bomas. To date they have ‘lit up’ 8 Bomas in the area and so far so good. Your stay directly contributes to projects such as this. Lewa Conservancy is at the forefront of rhino conservation in Kenya with anti-poaching dog squads and a translocation scheme for black rhino which you will be able to learn about during your stay if of interest. Mara Plains Camp in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy is leased from the local Maasai community and conservation fees directly support more than 1,000 families – a partnership which ensures the survival of an astounding volume and variety of wildlife. Saruni in the same vein, believes in ethical creation of wealth and the protection of wildlife and nature based on distribution of income and jobs to its stakeholders and custodians - this is why they too invest in community conservancies.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 2

Nairobi
On arrival in Nairobi you will be met at the airport and transferred to your lodge for the next 2 nights. Within 30 minutes of leaving customs you will find yourselves in the wilds of Nairobi National Park, famous for its lions and black rhino. This pretty safari lodge overlooks the river and rather than spending an uninspiring night at an airport hotel you can unwind from your journey with a drink in the bar surrounded by the sights and sounds of the bush and feel immediately like you are on holiday. The following day, no time is lost as you enjoy morning and evening game drives in the park as well as visits to both the Giraffe Centre and the wonderful Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage.

DAY 3 - 5

Samburu Game Reserve
This morning you will be collected from the Emakoko and transferred to the airport for your light aircraft flight north to the red earth of Samburu land. Saruni Samburu's wonderful villas are calved into the cliff face in the private Kalama Conservancy and overlook a waterhole with sunken photographic hide. As well as exploring the conservancy accompanied by Samburu Warriors, you will also safari in the main adjacent Samburu reserve famous for its huge herds of elephants. Sundowners in the reserve and wonderful candle-lit bush suppers await.

DAY 6 - 7

Lewa Conservancy
Today you will be transferred by road to Lewa. This private conservancy, long favoured by HRH Prince William (Prince William proposed to Catherine Middleton at Lewa) sits at the foot of Mount Kenya and is one of the oldest conservancies in Kenya. Lewa Wilderness is a very small and exclusive lodge on the conservancy, with just nine lovely thatched cottages and a real historic family homestead feel. Cottages are decorated with the Craig family's own antique furniture. You can choose your activities - these include morning and evening game drives with expert Maasai guides, guided bushwalks, horse-riding and camel safaris. The advantage of being located in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy is that you are surrounded by rich game viewing opportunities without the crowds. There is a very good chance of seeing all of the “Big Five” and Lewa is one of the only game parks where visitors are almost guaranteed to see the endangered black and white rhinos while on safari. With the backdrop of snow-capped Mount Kenya and the diversity of scenery from open plains, rolling hills, valleys, escarpments and rivers, Lewa is a magical place to game drive for the ultimate Kenyan safari experience.
