iSIMANGALISO WETLAND PARK

iSimangaliso was South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage site. The park used to be known as the St Lucia Wetlands but its new name, iSimangaliso means miracle and wonder, an apt description. The 332, 000 hectare park consists of three major lake systems, eight interlinking ecosystems, over 200km of beaches, most of South Africa’s remaining swamp forests, as well as Africa’s largest estuarine system. There are 526 bird species and 25 000 year-old vegetated coastal dunes – which are among the highest in the world.

Activities abound – you can horse ride, game drive, walk, canoe, power boat or explore the coral reef.
