This on-foot dawn encounter with big bull elephant, Boswell, took place in April 2023,  just beyond Zambezi Expeditions, a wonderful small semi-mobile tented camp on the Zambezi River. Cloud from African Bush Camps was my guide. He has 20 years of experience.

Guides in Zimbabwe have a reputation for being the best in Africa –  my time in Mana Pools certainly reinforced this belief. The accreditation process is rigorous starting with theory examinations covering wildlife, ecology, first aid and firearms. Trainees then spend at least two years in the field being mentored by a fully qualified guide gaining experience in different aspects of guiding including driving, river guiding and walking. A tough week-long practical assessement and interview process is the final stage to qualifying as a professional guide.
