When you think of trekking in Africa, you of course think of climbing Kilimanjaro. But there is more, much more! We at Bookatrekking.com have listed our favorites in these top five. Get inspired.

Ethiopia

This country may not be the first thing you have in mind when you think of a trekking holiday, but believe us. Ethiopia is an undiscovered pearl when it comes to hiking and trekking. The Ethiopian Highlands are the largest contiguous mountain ranges in Africa and the country is home to the Bale Mountains, the Simien Mountains, and the Danakil Depression, also known as the Afar Triangle. These three highlights of the country make great hiking and trekking possible.

Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is the other roof of Africa. About three million years ago, it was formed by the opening of the East African rift. Here you can find thousands of species of flora and fauna thanks to the fertile volcanic soil. In the immediate vicinity of the mountain you will find four different peoples: the Kikuyu, the Embu, the Ameru and the Maasai. Together with the wildlife you will find in the region, Climbing Mount Kenya is your dream destination for your trek.

Kilimanjaro

The roof of Africa. At the foot you’ll find giraffes, lions and elephants and at the top you’ll find snow. Kilimanjaro, the most famous mountain of the world. As a child you saw it in the background of the Lion King and since then you want to climb Kilimanjaro.

The most popular route is the Machame, better known as the Whisky Route. This trek takes 6 or 7 days and is known for its special views. Both the Marangu, the Machame, the Rongai, the Shira, the Lemosho and the Umbwe route towards Uhuru Peak trek through different climate zones to the snow. All routes you book of course at Bookatrekking.com. Kitabu haraka! Book quickly!

Mount Toubkal

Mount Toubkal is at 4,167 meters the highest mountain in Northern Africa. The beauty of this summit is that it is relatively easy to reach by foot. You don’t need any climbing experience.  This makes “Jbel Toubkal” perfect for trekking expeditions. Because the mountain is relatively close to the city of Marrakech, access is easy and trekking trips can be done in one weekend.

Mount Meru

Mount Meru is also known as “Kilimanjaro’s little brother”, is only 70 kilometers away from Kilimanjaro and is located in the Arusha National Park. This dormant volcano is often combined with climbing Kilimanjaro. A good warm-up that simplifies acclimatization on the Kili.

What most people don’t know is that Mount Meru, although it is a great warm-up for Kili, is a beautiful trek in itself! With an altitude of 4,566 m, Mount Meru is the second highest mountain in Tanzania and the fourth highest mountain in Africa. Not only are there far fewer hikers on these trails than Kilimanjaro, but it also has an abundance of wildlife.
