Located on a large open plain stretching towards the Shire River in Liwonde National Park, Kuthengo Camp sits beneath fever trees and baobabs. This new seasonal camp opened in May 2018 after eight months of hard work by the Robin Pope safaris team.
Kuthengo means 'the wild' or 'the bush' and this area alongside the Shire River is very beautiful. The 15 minute boat ride into camp will give you a good idea of what's to come.
There are just four spacious safari tents each facing downstream from their position on the river bank . Hippos graze nearby and this bend in the river is a favourite crossing point for the local herds of elephant. Each tent is en-suite, with double basin, bathtub and wonderful outdoor shower.
This is a rustic seasonal tented camp. The eco-friendly evening breeze air conditioning (state of the art and environment friendly cooling system for the bed within the mosquito net), adds to the comfort. The private decks are the best place to sit and admire the spectacular landscape.
Liwonde National Park is a fabulous park to explore with game drives and walking safaris in the drier months. Safari by boat along the Shire River is a real highlight of any stay here.
We think a few nights at Kuthengo would combine brilliantly with stays in the other Robin Pope lodges in the area (Majete and Lake Malawi).
Being able to link Liwonde, Majete and Lake Malawi by road transfer also helps to keep the budget down (compared to flying).
Kuthengo is a 3 – 4 hour road transfer from Lilongwe, or a 1 hour light aircraft flight then further hour’s scenic drive through the park. From Blantyre it is a 2.5 hour drive to the camp.
Connecting to sister lodge Mkulumadzi in Majete Wildlife Reserve, it is a 4 hour 30 minute road transfer and to Pumulani, Lake Malawi it is 2.5 hours by road.
Please note that entrance to the park is restricted to the hours 6am – 6pm.
Modern safari tents, four units (two twin, one king, one family tent).
En-suite bathrooms with (double) basin(s), bath and outdoor showers.
The camp runs off solar power with a backup generator for cloudy days. Tap water is filtered, but not safe for drinking; bottled water is also provided at the camp free of charge. Evening Breeze air conditioning units have been installed in all tents. It is designed to cool the air within your mosquito net and not the entire room.
Game drives, boating safaris, walking safaris and hiking.
Safari in Malawi's three key wildlife reserves, Majete, Liwonde and Nkhotakota, each transformed by the management of African Parks.
A week long trip combining safari in Liwonde with time on the lake.
