Mkulumadzi Majete Wildlife Reserve, Malawi

Mkulumadzi sits in a private concession within Majete Wildlife Reserve, right on the banks of the Shire River just a few kilometres from where it plunges into the Kapichira Falls. This really is a stunning location for a lodge. The excitement starts from the moment you arrive with guests needing to cross a footbridge strung across the boulder strewn river to reach the lodge.

There are just eight spacious ensuite thatched chalets with wonderful private decks, including family chalets with two bedrooms either side of a lounge area. The feel throughout is very contemporary. The main lodge is open fronted maximising the wonderful river and forest views. There is a restaurant with indoor and outdoor dining areas, a bar along with a lovely terrace shaded by giant leadwood and mango trees and lapa for quiet evenings around the camp fire. There is also a lovely swimming pool - perfect for watching the hippos wallowing in the river below.

The lodge has incorporated several eco features in the design of the space, including using solar power, evening breeze air conditioning and green roofs on the chalets (sloping roofs planted with succulents, grasses and aloes to help keep them cool in the dry season while reducing impact on the environment).

Guests staying here have a fabulous opportunity to explore Malawi's top safari destination. Thanks to African Parks, Majete is now a Big Five destination with wildlife numbers continuing to swell. The location of the lodge in a private concession means guests can enjoy an array of activities from day and night drives to walking safaris - a superb way to connect with the rugged landscape. The lodge also has a boat for exploring the calm stretches of Shire River.

This very stylish lodge, part of the Robin Pope Safaris portfolio of top quality camps and lodges, is reached by a 2 hour scenic road transfer from Blantyre. A few nights on safari here combines perfectly with time on the lakeshore.
