The Elephant Camp Near Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

The Elephant Camp is a small and intimate luxury safari camp with 12 spacious tented suites, 10km from the world famous Victoria Falls. The camp is situated on a private concession in Zimbabwe within and bounded by the Masuwe River and the Zambezi gorges and has access to fabulous game and wildlife.

The views from the camp are spectacular as they stretch across the African bush to the Falls themselves and the breathtaking gorges which separate Zimbabwe and Zambia. You can see the spray as it rises from the Falls - this is especially dramatic during full spate (March - May time).

Complimentary transfers are offered to and from Victoria Falls town daily to guests, where a whole range of activities can be enjoyed. All guests staying at The Elephant Camp are invited to meet the camp's elephants looked after by Wild Horizons. You can find out more about this project below.

Wild Horizon Elephants - a short history
In the 1980s the Zimbabwean Department of National Parks had a policy of culling what they deemed excess animals within the National Parks. Part of the policy involved destroying entire elephant herds, with the exception of the juveniles, who were no longer dependent on mother’s milk, and could be translocated. These elephant orphans were sold to local farmers and zoos and circuses around the world. The farmers bought the elephants to restock their farms, however, having being hand reared, the young elephants were habituated and a 'handful' to have around. It became virtually impossible to safely release any of them back into the wild - it would only be a matter of time before one wandered into a village or town. One local farmer, Rory Hensman, decided to take the situation in hand, offering the elephants a different life that may in time benefit the remaining wild herds. He very successfully trained the elephants and then approached Wild Horizons, a safari operation based in Vic Falls, with a view to utilising the elephants in the tourism industry and hopefully in turn highlighting conservation issues. Initially skeptical of the idea, Wild Horizons took on the project knowing that in order for it to be a success the welfare of the elephants was paramount. With this in mind Wild Horizons sent two of its guides to Riddles Elephant training school in Little Rock, Arkansas. Here they were taught not only how to humanely train the elephants but how to care for elephants in captivity. The original herd of 4 orphans were translocated to Wild Horizons in 1997.Over the last 13 years Wild Horizons has become the recognized elephant sanctuary for orphaned and abandoned elephants and the herd has now grown to 23, all of which were either orphaned or have been born within the herd.
