For those wishing to get off the beaten track then Tongole Wilderness is a great option. This fantastic lodge sits on the wild Bua River with just four simple thatched riverside suites and a two-bedroom family cottage with wrought iron shutters. The lodge is the only place to stay in the reserve. The main area is constructed as a large A frame building with dining area, bar and wooden deck. There is a staircase leading to a second deck high up in the apex of the roof with far reaching views over the river.
Tongole Lodge was started up as part of the Tongole Foundation, a charity set up by the Directors of Tongole to help vulnerable communities in Malawi, specifically in the Nkhotakota area. Efforts have been made to use sustainable materials throughout with rugs and furnishings sourced locally. The lodge has a very relaxed vibe.
The reserve is mostly made up of thick miombo woodland African Parks has worked hard to translocate wildlife to the reserve and create more of a tourist infrastructure. The park is a dream for birders and walkers and for anyone looking for a slice of untamed Africa.
Tongole can be accessed by road - it's a 3-4 hour journey from Lilongwe.
