Located in the vast savannah of Damaraland, Mowani Mountain Camp offers guests unique experiences, luxurious accommodation, and stunning scenery, all whilst remaining firm in their belief of investing in the local community and protecting and preserving wildlife along with the natural environment. Mowani has been instrumental in establishing a community vegetable garden which provides the camp with locally sourced produce, and has also expanded the waterhole and replanted indigenous plants, which helps to sustain the visiting elephant herds amongst other wildlife that call this region home. From beyond its borders, the camp is also a proud supporter of the Desert Lion Project. Mowani is also committed to reduce its carbon footprint with low energy lightbulbs, solar geysers, and by following the mantra of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ as much as possible.
You’ll find this beautiful eco-focussed camp perched upon a rocky outcrop commanding sensational views across the Abu Haub Valley, yet blending seamlessly into the landscape.
There are 12 twin-bedded ‘View Rooms’ all with thatched roofs, varying outlooks, and en-suite facilities. Four of the ‘Superior View Rooms’ face towards the west and offer panoramic distant views. There are five ‘Standard View Rooms’ which face either east or northeast, and have more limited views into the valley, and three ‘View Rooms’ which offer a view towards the east.
There is one ‘Luxury Room’ which is thatched and with part-canvas walls, has en-suite facilities, and a mini fridge (drinks not included). This room has its own private deck and overlooks the valley towards the west. It is situated close to the lodge and is ideal for guests who are not too mobile.
Why not treat yourself and upgrade to either the Mini Suite, or the indulgent Mountain Suite? The Mini Suite is completely private, offering a lounge, satellite TV, airconditioning, minibar, laundry service and open-air en-suite bathroom. The Mountain Suite has spectacular panoramic views and offers a lounge, satellite TV & CD music centre, private dining, and bar facilities (drinks included), as well as en-suite bathroom complete with outdoor bush bath and shower, which make the most of the spectacular view. You will also have access to a personal waiter (upon request).
There are some great activities here, and Mowani’s local guides are always keen to share their knowledge and provide insight into local traditions. The local villagers are also warm and welcoming and happy to share their experiences that are built up over a lifetime. Enjoy a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Twyfelfontein, famous for its ‘Burnt Mountain’ and the ‘Organ Pipes’ and explore the primitive Bushman rock engravings and paintings. Guided nature drives are also offered, giving you chance to traverse the surrounding area and spot the elusive desert elephants and black rhino.
Guests are also free to follow the short self-guided walking trails, or relax by the pool, enjoying the spectacular surroundings. The night skies at Mowani are nothing less than spectacular having one of the lowest counts of light pollution on the continent, it’s certainly a sight to behold.
