A new expedition style camp has opened in Nxai Pan, Botswana. The seasonal camp nestled within an island of bush willows is part of the African Bush Camp portfolio and reflects their ethos of conservation and sustainability.
Nxai Pan is Bostwana’s smallest national park and arguably the most accessible in the vast Kalahari Basin. The summer rains revive the landscape and it is during the ‘Green’ summer season (Nov-May) that large herds of zebra and plains game arrive, followed by predators. Flowers bloom, flamingos dance, giraffes start courting and cheetah, lion and brown hyena can be seen. Desert adapted species including springbok, oryx and bat eared fox are frequently sighted.
The new Migration Expeditions Camp is operational from 1 December – 31 March to coincide with the life-giving rains and provide the ideal base from which to witness the incredibly transformation of this region from a stark and arid landscape to a rich and vibrant one.
There are just six expedition style tents including full size twin beds, solar lighting and fan and simple ensuite facility with bucket shower and environmentally sensitive portable loo. The two mess tents are positioned adjacent to the campfire and feature a communal dining table and open plan cooking area in one with a lounge and library (including charging station) in the other.
Activities focus on morning and afternoon game drives within the parameters of park regulations. Nxai Pan is not only famous for its migratory visitors but also for Baines Baobabs in the south of the park. These sentinels stand watch over KudiaKam Pan as they have done for over 100,000 years – much unchanged since the scene was painted by Thomas Baines in 1862.
For those clients who have been on several safaris, this experience offers something rather different. We suggest a minimum 3 night stay in order to fully experience the area. The focus is very much on the landscape and the vast star studded skies with wildlife interaction from a distance.
Nxai Pan Migration Camp can be combined with other African Bush Camp properties, for example 3 nights here would pair brilliantly with 3 nights at Khwai Bush Camp (or Khwai Tented Camp) offering the contrasting lush landscape and a chance to see the resident species of the Delta.
