Explorers Against Extinction - Desert & Delta Rhino Friendly Fly in Safari

This 'Explorers against Extinction' safari with Desert & Delta gives you the opportunity to see many iconic species in the wilds of Botswana. Visit the fabled Savute region of Chobe, famous for its bull elephants, stay riverside on the edge of the Makgadikgadi National Park, one of the world's largest salt pans home to unique flora and fauna and explore the delights of the Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta and a wildlife haven. This is the place chosen by Rhino Conservation Botswana (RCB) to be a safe haven for rhino. RCB is working to increase and protect populations of black and white rhinos in Botswana and by going on safari here you can learn about the project and support conservation efforts.

**Desert & Delta have seven lodges in this area and you can combine your favourites to make a safari to suit you - see below for further fantastic combinations.

Privileged to have many properties within Botswana’s National Parks and Game Reserves, Desert & Delta Safaris is committed to working with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks to ensure the preservation of the unique habitats within both these and their private concessions. Desert and Delta continue to focus on the Rhino Conservation Botswana Reintroduction and Relocation Program’s great work within the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park as a key environmentally focused program to fund and donate towards - something your stay will directly contribute to. The Real World Conservation Trust's Explorers against Extinction campaign has worked to raise awareness about the rhino relocation in Botswana and the threats faced by this iconic species. We have pledged to fund a new anti-poaching dog squad to help protect Botswana's precious rhinos and are delighted to say that we have now raised enough to purchase two triple role Belgian malinois pups and fund their training with ASA. The dogs are due for deployment to the Okavango in summer 2018. You can find out more on our 'News' and 'Conservation' pages.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1-2

Makgadikgadi
Fly from Maun to Leroo La Tau airstrip. On arrival at you will be met and transferred to camp. This lovely lodge with an elevated position looking out over the Boteti River, right on the boundary of the Makgadikgadi National Park, one of the famous Kalahari salt pans, offers guided day and night game drives as well as boat trips on the river.

DAY 3-4

Savute region, Western Chobe
Enjoy an early morning game drive and breakfast before being transferred to the airstrip for your flight to fascinating Savute. Stretching from the waterways of the Linyanti all the way to Savute Marsh, the winding waterways of Savute Channel have pumped life into the western section of Chobe National Park for many thousands of generations. This fickle and unpredictable channel however, has a fascinating history of flooding and drying up independently of good rainy seasons and flood levels elsewhere - a mystery that has intrigued geologists and other researchers for many years. When David Livingstone discovered the Savute Channel in 1851 it was flowing. Thirty years later the channel had disappeared and the Savute Marsh had dried out, remaining this way for almost 80 years. It flowed again in the late 1950s, continuing until the early 1980s when it again receded, gaining the channel its reputation as ‘the river which flows in both directions’. In 2009, after another extended hiatus, the channel began flowing again and by January 2010 had spilled into the Savute Marsh for the first time in three decades. No-one knows how long the water will remain.

DAY 5-6

The Okavango Delta
After an early morning game drive and breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight into the Okavango Delta. Your camp for the next two nights is on the remote Nxaragha Island surrounded by the permanent waters of the Okavango Delta and therefore offering a year-round wilderness experience.
