Gorilla Habituation Fly-In Experience

Spend longer with Uganda’s iconic mountain gorillas in magical Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and discover the fascinating tribal culture of the Batwa.

This thrilling fly-in gorilla habituation experience packs a lot into a short break.

Standard gorilla permits allow for one hour with the mountain gorillas - groups are usually between 8 and 10 people and you are allocated a specific habituated gorilla family first thing to track through the forest and visit.

The Habituation experience works slightly differently.

Groups tend to be smaller and you are permitted to spend up to 4 hours observing and following your gorilla family, guided by rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

The family you track and visit is not fully habituated. The purpose of these interactions is to get the gorillas used to human presence so this is a fabulous and fascinating opportunity to take part in the process. The guides, trackers and researchers who accompany you in to the forest will help you understand the body language exhibited by the gorillas and the complex family relationships. For up to four hours you follow the gorillas, becoming part of their forest world, as they play, eat, groom and go about their daily lives.

Following your time with the gorillas, you have the chance to experience tribal culture with the Batwa or ‘forest-keeper’ pygmies and to interact with the locals on a community walk through the villages.

Low altitude domestic flights offer spectacular views over Uganda and maximise your holiday time.

The Real World Conservation Trust works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects through our Explorers Against Extinction campaign. Safari Itinerary

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be met by a hotel representative who will transfer you to the hotel, a short drive away from the airport. You have time to relax and enjoy dinner.

DAY 2 - 4

Kisoro - Bwindi
An early start today as you will be flying to Kisoro for your gorilla trip. Enjoy spectacular views of the volcanoes as you come in to land. You will be met by your guide who will drive you to your lodge about 1-hour away, where you can relax as you wait to have lunch. Later in the afternoon you take a guided 2-hour village walk and learn about the plants and birds. The following day (3) you will have another early start as you meet your wildlife ranger guides, conservationists and researchers for a briefing, before entering the forest to be part of the process of getting wild gorillas used to human presence. This is a thrilling experience where you gain an insight to gorilla behaviour in the wild, their daily activities, health and natural habitat. Once you find them, spend longer hours not only watching them go about their daily business but participate in the habituation process – a truly special and memorable experience in the jungle. On Day 4 you'll head off for a fascinating experience with the Batwa and gain a rare insight into their culture. This pygmy tribe of former ‘forest keepers’ lost their home when the national park was created. See how they lived in the forest and participate in activities such as using a bow and arrow or preparing food. This activity lasts around 5-6 hours and supports the Batwa to adapt to a new way of life. Return for a relaxing evening at the lodge. (Optional canoe trip on Lake Mutanda.)

Making an early start, you return to Kisoro airstrip on a journey through beautiful countryside and dotted with locals tending their fields. Enjoy the spectacular scenery of western Uganda from a different vantage point as you fly back to Entebbe, where our representative will take you for lunch and a chance to rest at a day-room in a hotel. Later, visit the craft market for souvenirs. Your tour ends as we drop you in back at the airport.
