Kwando: Giraffe Safari

Enjoy a diverse safari experience with both land and water based activities in Botswana. Stay in the private Kwara Concession on the Kwando River, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve and at two camps in the Linyanti Reserve in north west Chobe. All three areas are teeming with wildlife including the chance to see many rare species, for example, African Wild Dog.

Large herds of elephant and giraffe are also prevalent. Activities are varied; enjoy safari by mokoro on the river and on the lagoons as well as by 4x4 on the plains. Kwando are experts in their field and their safaris are truly outstanding with world class guides and trackers. You stay on private reserves meaning you will see far fewer other people when out and about game viewing.

The Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects. Partners include Save the Elephants, Save the Rhino, The Sheldrick Trust, Rhino Conservation Botswana and Animals saving Animals. You can find out more on our Conservation pages. On behalf of every client travelling, Real Africa makes a donation to the Trust. Our aim is to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and to promote sustainable, socially responsible travel which benefits the wildlife and communities you choose to visit. The Trust's current campaign, Explorers against Extinction has successfully raised enough money to fund a brand new canine unit for RCB. Two pups were trained with Animals saving Animals and deployed to Botswana in summer 2018 as rhino protection dogs. Visit our News and Conservation pages for more info! Kwando itself is a 100% citizen owned with 97% being Botswana citizens. By investing in wildlife areas and pioneering renewable energy they ensure that guests leave only footprints behind...

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 3

Kwara Concession, Okavango Delta
On arrival at Maun you will be met and assisted to your onward flight to the Okavango Delta. You then fly by light aircraft to Kwando Splash Camp Airstrip where you will be met by a camp driver/guide. You then enjoy a short transfer to camp. On arrival, enjoy afternoon tea before departing on your afternoon/evening game drive. You will return to camp in time to freshen-up before dinner. Spend the next few days enjoying daily game drives and safari activities. Both day and night game drives and bush walks are conducted by experienced guides and trackers. Seasonal, water level dependent activities offered are boat cruises, mokoro excursions and basic, leisure fishing. The private Kwara Concession, on the northern edge of the Okavango Delta, is huge occupying an area of 175 000 hectares. With considerable water boundary of 30 kms with the world famous Moremi Game Reserve allowing free movement of wildlife between these areas the concession has the advantage of the wildlife of the reserve without the restrictions on activities experienced within the reserve. In addition to game drives and motorboat excursions the concession offers walks, fishing and mokoro excursions. The Kwara Concession is particularly well known for wild dog, although lions, leopard and cheetah are also found here. Plentiful game is found in the dry hinterland with impala, tsessebe, kudu and giraffe common. Open areas support Zebra and wildebeest along with buffalo and the closer bush steenbok and bushbuck.

DAY 4 - 5

Linyanti Reserve
This morning you will be transferred to the airstrip where you fly on to the Linyanti Reserve. On arrival you will be met and transferred to Kwando Lebala Camp. The Linyanti Reserve is an enormous private concession, comprising nearly 300,000 acres of prime wilderness area in the far north-east of Botswana. It is bordered to the north by the Linyanti River, and to the east by the Chobe National Park, and contains two thirds of the length of the mysterious Savuti Channel. Apart from its sheer size, the most remarkable feature of the Linyanti Reserve is the diverse range of habitats that it encompasses. This diversity of habitat in turn supports a wide array of wildlife, and this area is particularly well known for its huge herds of elephants (probably the largest herds in Africa), and the lions of the Savuti Channel. Spend the next couple of days enjoying game drives and safari activities. Guests are guided by a two person team of professional guide and tracker - a special feature of the Kwando Safaris wildlife experience. Due to its location in a private concession, game drives can go off-road to allow vehicles to be positioned closer to special predator sighting which enhances the photographic and game viewing experience. The evening/ night drives are a Kwando Safaris speciality.

DAY 6 - 7

Kwando River
After breakfast, you will be transferred by road to your next camp, and will have the chance to game-drive en-route. Following lunch, you will enjoy your afternoon/evening game drive. You spend the next couple of days enjoying game drives and boat trips on the Kwando River. Lagoon Camp lies on the shady banks of the Kwando River, nestled beneath towering ebony and marula trees. The densely forested site is home to a wide variety of birds and mammals; the stunning views and close proximity of wildlife all contribute to the pervading sense of calm. The area has a well-earned reputation for big game with seasonal large herds of elephant and buffalo. In the winter herds of up to a thousand are not uncommon and large numbers of elephant drink at the river bank in full view of the main camp deck. This vast concentration of game attracts the attention of large predators, including the Lagoon wild dog pack who regularly den close to the camp.
