Lemala: Crater & Plains (SOUTH)

This is a fantastic week long drive-in safari combining two of Tanzania's most famous wildlife areas, but where possible, skirting the crowds. Stay in a small tented camp in acacia woodland on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater, travelling in your own 4x4 vehicle with driver/guide, before exploring the highlands en-route to the southern plains of the Serengeti where the wildebeest calve in January through to March.

Spring, when the wildebeest are calving, really is the best time to visit the southern Serengeti . With the vast herds gathering in one area is is truly one of the world's great wildlife spectacles. Of course with youngsters being born in large numbers you are also going to get the big cats (lion, leopard, cheetah) and this area of the Serengeti is home to the densest concentration of predators in Africa at this time of the year. It makes for some gripping game drives and those photographers amongst you will get some awesome shots at this time of year. In the Ngorongoro Crater you will also find incredible wildlife such as rhinos, elephants, hippos and lions. What makes the Ngorongoro Crater really special is the unique landscape as this national park is set right in a perfectly circular volcanic crater. The views from the rim are truly spectacular!

This safari is ideal between January and March. For travel June to November, the wildebeest have moved on and you need to be further north - please see Lemala: Crater & Plains (NORTH) safari itinerary.

Enroute, enjoy a safari in Lake Manyara, and a picnic lunch, before arriving at your lovely small tented camp set back from the crater rim. This is a lovely, friendly little safari camp in a quiet forested location that enables guests to be amongst the first to descend into the Crater in the mornings. The following morning, as the sun rises, enjoy a thrilling drive into the Crater arriving on the crater floor before many other visitors. You spend the day on safari, stopping for a picnic at the hippo lagoon. The scenery from the rim of the Crater is incredible and the area has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in order to protect its unique landscape and wildlife. As you would expect from the name it was created from an extinct volcano and is a vast circular reserve set within the volcanic rim. It truly is spectacular. It is also home to a vast array of wildlife thanks to the fertile soil and access to plenty of water. You will see plenty of the iconic but sadly endangered species you would expect on safari including elephants, rhinos, hippos and of course the big cats.

DAY 4 - 7

The Serengeti - Southern Plains
Drive through the Ngorongoro Highlands to the southern plains of the Serengeti where you will staying for four nights in a small mobile tented camp in a prime position to track the migration. Mobile tented camps are perfect for tracking the wildlife as they are erected in the areas attracting the best game each year and they are also low impact so better for the environment and the wildlife than a more luxurious permanent camp would be. The wildebeest are fairly sedentary at this time of the year, feasting on fresh shoots following the short rains in December. It is on the southern plains that they have their calves usually within a 3 week period between the end of January and the end of February. With so many young about, many predators are drawn in making for exciting safari right through from January until the rains break in late March/April time. You will find plenty of lion, leopard and cheetah in the area at this time of year.
