An exciting walking safari in the Luangwa Valley where you get to really experience the African Bush firsthand. You also get to go wild camping giving you the chance to really get off the beaten track and see incredible wildlife. Walking safaris are the only way of really discovering the true secrets of the bush. Walks are led by an experienced naturalist and accompanied by an armed game scout. You also get to stay in a permanent safari camps so you do get to enjoy some luxuries on this holiday both before and after the bush camping. As well as the bush walking you will go on twice daily game drives from the permanent camps.

Walking fitness:
For a general idea of fitness level, we think you should be able to run 50 metres, but please understand that this is not because you will be running from an animal! It’s just another way of showing a level of fitness.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 2

South Luangwa National Park
On arrival at Lusaka Airport you need to then fly to Mfuwe International Airport. On arrival at Mfuwe Airport you will be met by a representative of Luangwa River Camp and will be transferred to camp. The Luangwa Valley is vast, remote and home to both people and a truly impressive variety of game. The South Luangwa Park is 9050 sq. kilometres; with the river, its tributaries and the riverine strips being the focus of the wildlife viewing. There are diverse habitats, from huge ox bow lagoons of varying stages of maturity, woodlands, ebony groves, grassland and thickets, that host a great variety of wildlife. The birdlife is also excellent with over 450 species to be seen. You head off at dawn for an early morning game drive when the animals are very active. After a couple of hours you head back to camp for a hearty breakfast and a rest. A lovely lunch is followed by a rest before a quick spot of tea and a late afternoon game drive then back in time for dinner. Not a bad way to spend a day!

South Luangwa National Park
Following an early morning breakfast you will enjoy a game drive through the park to the Luangwa River crossing point opposite Tena Tena. Tena Tena staff will meet you and will boat you across the river, and then drive to Tena Tena Camp. On arrival at Tena Tena Camp you will enjoy lunch. Following lunch, there is time to relax before your afternoon game drive. Guests can enjoy superb game watching at the busy waterhole in front of the tents. Another highlight at Tena Tena is romantic dinners served under the stars on the deck. This is a lovely spot to enjoy the South Luangwa National Park's resident wildlife.

DAY 4 - 5

Bush Walking and Bush Camping
This morning you will be up at sunrise for breakfast and then the morning walk to your bush camp. Situated in a secluded area of the Nsefu sector the camp is simple and basic with as little impact on the environment as possible. On arrival at Camp you will enjoy a leisurely lunch. Following lunch, there is time to relax before tea and your afternoon walk. After your walk, you will return to camp for sundowners and dinner around the camp fire. Bush Camping is all about walking with the best of guides, dipping deeper into the bush from the fixed camps by camping out for a couple of nights, dinner and stories around the fire, simple but delicious food. Your days are spent walking in the game rich area of the Luangwa riverine habitat, with ebony groves, many lagoons and of course the Luangwa River itself. During your morning walk the camp will be moved to a second site and lunch will be waiting for you on arrival, alternatively you and your guide may decide to take a picnic lunch en route.
