Malawi Southern Circuit - Safari and Beach

This enjoyable safari tour starts in Majete Wildlife Reserve where you will go on twice daily game drives as well as night game drives and guided walking safaris. There is plenty of excellent wildlife to see including elephants, black rhino, zebra, leopard and fabulous birdlife. You then head up into the hills where the temperature is cooler and the scenery breathatking. You will get the chance to visit a tea plantation and hike around in the hills. Finally you head to Lake Malawi where you have a few days to relax on the beautiful sandy beaches. If you are the more active type then you can enjoy scuba diving, sailing, swimming, fishing and other watersports during your stay.

The Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects. Partners include Save the Elephants, Save the Rhino, The Sheldrick Trust, Rhino Conservation Botswana and Animals saving Animals. You can find out more on our Conservation pages. On behalf of every client travelling, Real Africa makes a donation to the Trust. Our aim is to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and to promote sustainable, socially responsible travel which benefits the wildlife and communities you choose to visit. African Parks are a non-profit organisation who run Majete, Liwonde and Nkhotakota parks in Malawi. They have done an incredible job turning these parks from barren wildernesses into thriving wildlife reserves. Their work to restore the wildlife and habitats means that now you can find the Big Five in Majete, abundant birdlife and rare species such as the black rhino across Malawi. They have also been involved in huge projects such as the elephant translocation programme and thanks to them Malawi has now become a beacon in wildlife conservation.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 3

Majete Wildlife Reserve
On arrival at Blantyre Chileka International Airport you will meet your experienced English speaking driver/guide. You will be transferred to Majete Wildlife Reserve which is situated in the lower Shire valley in the South West of Malawi. Majete Wildlife Reserve offers a year-round wildlife experience and each season offers something unique. More than 4,000 animals have been reintroduced into the park, including elephant, black rhino, buffalo, zebra, sable antelope, eland, waterbuck, nyala, hartebeest, kudu and many more species. Standing beside the Shire River in the south west of Malawi, this area of the Great Rift Valley is characterised by sculpted miombo woodland undulating across the hills, which in turn overlook stunning river valleys and riverine forest. Depending on your arrival time you will enjoy lunch looking out over the Shire River or if you arrive in the afternoon, you can enjoy afternoon tea. Afternoon tea, is followed by your first late afternoon/evening game drive. You spend the next couple of days game viewing or enjoying the other activities available including boating safaris, bush walks, hiking Majete Hill, black rhino tracking, cultural tours, birding trips on the Shire River and to nearby Elephant Marsh.

DAY 4 - 6

Shire Highlands
After breakfast and farewells, you will be transferred to Huntingdon House situated on the slopes of Thyolo Mountain. Arguably the most scenically beautiful region of Malawi, The Thyolo district forms the heart of Malawi's tea producing region with rolling hills of immaculately cultivated, emerald green plantations and some of the oldest estates in the country. With magnificent views of Mount Mulanje and the Lower Shire valley to the west, Satemwa enjoys a temperate climate of the Shire Highlands and relaxed ambiance of a by-gone era. Visitors to this corner of Malawi cannot but help to be caught up in the colonial magic of the area and diverse scenery which ranges from tropical evergreen forests to riverine thickets and rolling hills. While you are here you can enjoy two full days to explore the surrounding area; tour of the tea factory, visit to the Mount Mulanje Massif (it rises above 2,380m above sea level) or perhaps a short hike to Dziwe la Nkhalamba rock pool and falls. You set your own pace on how you want to spend your days.

DAY 7 - 10

Lake Malawi
Following breakfast you will be transferred by road on a very scenic drive through Malawi to your next destination, the Nankumba Peninsula of Lake Malawi. The Nankumba Peninsula is recognised as one of the most beautiful shores of the lake and borders Lake Malawi National Park. Malawi's most impressive feature is Lake Malawi, the third largest lake in Africa and 20% of the surface of Malawi. Lake Malawi is a World Heritage site and offers a larger variety of freshwater fish species than all of Europe and North America combined, and offers some of the best freshwater scuba diving in the world. Guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities at Pumulani on Lake Malawi, whether it's snorkelling or kayaking, or just relaxing on the beach. For visitors wanting to do something active on their Malawi vacation, waterskiing, sailing, diving, snorkelling, fishing, wakeboarding, kayaking and bird watching are some of the activities available. Visitors can also enjoy a sunset cruise on Pumulani's traditional wooden dhow, hand built by local craftsmen.
