MASAI MARA FLY-IN: Giraffe Manor & Sala's Camp

This fascinating trip allows you to get up close to Africa's iconic species. First you stay at the wonderful Giraffe Manor where you can breakfast with endangered Rothschild's Giraffes before you head into the heart of the Masai Mara to Sala's Camp, a wonderful riverside tented camp in a prime wildlife area, famous for its big cats, and in an excellent position for the Great Migration between late June and September. On your return to Nairobi at the end of the tour you will also get the chance to visit the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage.

The Safari Collection is heavily focused on sustainability and giving back with a low impact, community and conservation orientated ethos. Specific projects include the Mara Cheetah Project, using a research-driven conservation approach through a combination of long-term population monitoring, ecological research and community-based conservation. Sala's guides are at the core of the monitoring programme, taking images and identifying individuals for the Kenya Wildlife Service. You will also have the chance to find out about the Rothschild Giraffe project at Giraffe Manor. The Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects. Partners include Save the Elephants, Save the Rhino, The Sheldrick Trust, Rhino Conservation Botswana and Animals saving Animals. You can find out more on our Conservation pages. On behalf of every client travelling, Real Africa makes a donation to the Trust. Our aim is to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and to promote sustainable, socially responsible travel which benefits the wildlife and communities you choose to visit.

Safari Itinerary

Giraffe Manor
You will be met at the airport and transferred to Giraffe Manor for the 11am check-in. Since its founders, Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, rescued a baby giraffe named Daisy from a heavily-poached area of western Kenya in 1974, their home has become a household name among wildlife lovers worldwide – and Daisy a star in her own right. Today, Daisy’s home has been opened to the world – and provides what we feel is the very best place to begin or end your safari in Kenya. Set in 120 acres of untouched indigenous forest eight miles from downtown Nairobi, Giraffe Manor is a world away from the bustle of the city. The 1930s manor house is run by Betty’s son, Rick Anderson, and his wife Bryony, who have created the ultimate ‘home from home’ with their rich blend of warm surroundings, welcoming staff, and delectable home-cooked cuisine. Meals are almost invariably interrupted by one of the manor’s celebrated four-legged residents, who poke their heads through the giant windows to politely request a titbit or two! The house comprises five double bedrooms, immaculately furnished in the style of their day, with large four-poster beds, antique furnishings and striking Art Deco bathrooms. Two of the rooms convert to a family suite, while the rear of the house has a large extension ideal for older children. One of the main bedrooms boasts the original furniture of Karen Blixen’s guestroom, and is hung with exquisite wildlife paintings by her famous cook Kamante.

DAY 2 - 4

Masai Mara
After breakfast you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to Wilson Airport in Nairobi for your light aircraft flight to the Masai Mara and Sala's Camp, On arrival at the Masai Mara Keekorok airstrip you will be met and transferred. It's just a short game drive from the airstrip to your tented camp on the river, which contrasts greatly in style from Giraffe Manor. The camp is located in the centre of the wildebeest migration routes and lies in a shaded forest on the convergence of two rivers, with views towards the Northern Serengeti and Tanzania. For the next few days you will enjoy morning and afternoon game drives.

Today you will fly back to Nairobi Wilson where a lovely day room at elegant Hemingways in Nairobi will be waiting for you. After lunch you will be taken to the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage where you can watch the baby elephants being fed and learn all the about the vital work the team do in Kenya and further afield. After the visit you will be transferred to the international airport for your flight home.
