Robin Pope Safaris - Luangwa Trail

South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, which marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, is one of the world’s last unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. On this holiday you spend a week here in 3 different camps exploring a variety of different landscapes, habitats and wildlife. You stay in a selection of Robin Pope Safari Camps - they are world renowned for their incredible safaris and expert guides. They were amongst the first to pioneer tourism in the South Luangwa and you are really in the best hands to get the most from your Zambian safari. You can enjoy a wide variety of safari activities based on and around the Luangwa River on this holiday including game drives, river safaris, canoeing, walking safaris and catch and release fishing.

The Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects. Partners include Save the Elephants, Save the Rhino, The Sheldrick Trust, Rhino Conservation Botswana and Animals saving Animals. You can find out more on our Conservation pages. On behalf of every client travelling, Real Africa makes a donation to the Trust. Our aim is to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and to promote sustainable, socially responsible travel which benefits the wildlife and communities you choose to visit. Robin Pope shares our mind-set and is involved directly in a number of projects in Zambia which include working with four schools in the Luangwa area that benefit the communities in which they operate, the Luangwa Safari Association Medical Fund, founded by Robin Pope Safaris that contributes to the upkeep of the main local clinic in Mfuwe and the Zambian Carnivore Programme which works to conserve large carnivore species.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 2

South Luangwa National Park
On arrival in Lusaka you will transfer to the flight to Mfuwe. On arrival at the airstrip you will be met and transferred to the camp. Luangwa River Camp borders the world-renowned South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, which marks the end of the Great Rift Valley. It is one of the world’s last unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. The small size of the lodge means there is a lot of flexibility as regards game viewing activities. Guests can enjoy game drives and walking safaris ranging from half day excursions to full day activities with a bush lunch to allow access into different areas of the national park. The park is accessed by crossing the Luangwa River either by boat when the waters are high or by 4WDs in drier season.

DAY 3 - 4

South Luangwa National Park
After an early breakfast, a game drive through the park takes you into the Nsefu Sector, which is recognised as a phenomenal game view area. On arrival at Tena Tena Camp you will enjoy lunch. Tena Tena is only open for the dry season. The camp is set in a grove of trees and bushes so you can hardly see the tents as you walk to the main area – a large marquee style tent. The view was across an unusually wide stretch of the Luangwa River and you can see the hills past Nkwali – some 60kms away. Guests can enjoy superb game watching at the busy waterhole in front of the tents. Another highlight at Tena Tena is romantic dinners served under the stars on the deck.

DAY 5 - 7

South Luangwa National Park
After an early breakfast, a game drive through the park to Nsefu Camp. This is a stunning permanent camp nestled up on the banks of the Luangwa River in the famous Nsefu sector of the park. With views up and down the Luangwa, the six rooms have one of the best settings of any Luangwa camp and have a team of guides that are up there with the best. The view of the river is superb and includes a terraced area where game grazes during the day. The bar and sitting room, tucked in beside a huge extinct termite mound, overlooks a waterhole that is very productive for game, especially leopard at night. Activities include game drives, visiting the local village and exploring the salt pans.
