Saruni: Samburu and the Mara

This is a superb fly-in safari combination - three nights in the private Kalama Conservancy bordering Samburu and three nights in the private Mara North Conservancy bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve. With both lodges being in private conservancies guests can enjoy a range of activities from 4x4 safari, walking and night drives to glorious sundowners and picnics. Bush suppers are a highlight.

The lodges contrast beautifully. Saruni Samburu is architecturally striking, perched high on the red rocks above Samburu, with breathtaking views from all the chic villas and public areas. Saruni Mara feels far more organic, nestled in a wooded valley with individual luxury thatched cottages fanning out from the main mess area with its wonderful fire place and lofty roof.

Please note: guests in the Mara have the choice of staying at either Saruni Mara or mobile camp Saruni Wild - please let us know your preference.

This safari stays at private conservancies which work in partnership with the local community to safeguard the wild and its wildlife. Kalama is a critical migratory corridor between northern and southern conservation areas. Mara North is one of the largest community and private sector owned conservancies in the world and has one of the lowest tourist and vehicle densities in the ecosystem due to managed volume and strict land-use plans (350 acres to 1 guest). Your stay directly helps to conserve these important habitats and helps the local community. In addition, the Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) supports the work of the Sheldrick Trust, donating over $20,000 in 2017 following Explorers against Extinction fundraising.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1-3

Kalama Conservancy, Samburu
Fly from Nairobi Wilson airport north to the Kalama airstrip bordering the famous Samburu area of Kenya. The landscape is striking here, with its red earth and spectacular doum palms. The wildlife is different too, with many endangered species including what is known locally as the Special Five: Grevy's Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe and Beisa Oryx. Large herds of elephants are an impressive sight and as the dry season progresses sightings of the big cats increase with leopards prancing on the hot rocks of Kalama. Samburu and neighbouring Kalama are special places - you will be guided by Samburu warriors who will introduce you to their culture during your stay - this adds immeasurably to your experience.

DAY 4-6

Mara North Conservancy, Masai Mara
After breakfast you will game drive back to the Kalama airstrip and fly south-west to the Masai Mara, landing at Mara North airstrip. You can enjoy a safari en route to camp with lots of wildlife in the immediate vicinity from huge harems of gazelle to large families of Maasai giraffe and herds of zebra and buffalo. This is the perfect place to see big cats - the Masai Mara is a lion stronghold and observing the different prides is fascinating. Leopards stalk the rivers and cheetah can also be seen here making for a thrilling three days.

Return to Nairobi
After a morning safari you will fly back to Nairobi where a day room will be waiting for you at the House of Waine hotel. Relax by the pool or enjoy visits in the afternoon to the nearby Giraffe centre. Please let us know if you would like to visit the Sheldrick Trust before your transfer to the airport in the evening.
