Southern Parks - Selous & Ruaha Safari with Swahili Coast

Explore the remote and quiet southern Tanzania on safari before heading off to the beach at beautiful and tranquil Ras Kutani. On this extended safari trip you stay in two different safari camps giving you the opportunity to experience different scenery, eco-systems and wildlife in both Selous and Ruaha national parks.

This is an incredible safari holiday for those looking to get off the beaten track. Selous and Ruaha are both much wilder and more remote than the game reserves of Northern Tanzania and you are unlikely to see any other visitors when out on your game drives.

The game is diverse and you will get the chance to spot the Big Five as well as a variety of other herbivores, predators and wildlife. You might even get the chance to see the very endangered and rare African Wild Dog if you are extremely lucky.

Ras Kutani’s keynote is relaxation, escape the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in the peaceful sanctuary but for those wanting to drag themselves away from their sun lounger, they do offer beachside activities. Head to the spa for a rejuvenating massage, or try boogie boarding, kayaking on the lagoon, venture for a forest or beach walk, snorkel around the shore side shipwreck or visit the local village. They are also lucky enough to host turtles, who lay their nests on the white sand beach, so guests may have the opportunity to watch hatchlings during the months of June to August.

The Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects. On behalf of every client travelling, Real Africa makes a donation to the Trust. Our aim is to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and to promote sustainable, socially responsible travel which benefits the wildlife and communities you choose to visit.

DAY 2 - 4

Ruaha National Park
After breakfast you will check out and fly to Ruaha Jongomero Airstrip. On arrival at the airstrip you will be met by a camp driver guide and will be transferred the short distance to Jongomero in time for lunch. For guests seeking an authentic African adventure, a visit to Ruaha National Park is essential. Remembered for the rapids of the Great Ruaha River and its rugged landscape of undulating hills, rocky outcrops, and a horizon studded with the imposing silhouettes of the iconic baobab; no other park in Tanzania epitomises the definition of "Wild Africa" quite like Ruaha. Whilst being the largest National Park in Tanzania, Ruaha also covers a unique transition zone where the Eastern and Southern biomes intersect offering an extraordinary diversity of animals, plants and birds. There are upwards of 570 species of birds; half of all Tanzania’s birds may be glimpsed in this park making it one of the continents premier birding destinations. Ruaha also holds one of the greatest populations of elephant in any African park, buffalo gather in large herds as well as giraffe, zebra, impala, eland, hippo, crocodile, lion and leopard. The rarer, less-seen creatures can also be found including sable and roan antelope, kudus, Grants gazelle, honey badgers and is second to only Selous for the largest population of wild dog.

DAY 5 - 7

Selous Game Reserve
This morning you will fly from Ruaha to Selous where you will be met and transerred to your nexy safari camp. The Selous Reserve is the largest in Africa, spanning 55,000km² and is four times larger than the Serengeti. Due to the local topography around Siwandu, the location is considered the undisputed prime position for superlative game viewing. Selous has more than half of Tanzania’s elephant population, over 120,000 buffalos, and both the 40,000 hippo and 4,000 lion in the reserve are probably the largest populations on the continent. Selous is also home to the planet’s largest population of rare wild dogs; giving guests an opportunity to glimpse all of these exotic animals in true unspoilt landscape. Siwandu Camp is a 10-minute game drive from the airstrip and is located in a grove of palms on the shore of Lake Nzerakera. As well as ensuring a stunning backdrop for the camp, this lakeshore location offers a consistency of game viewing as the animals gravitate around the lake and is the only place in East Africa where you can experience water-based game activities.
