Southern Parks - Selous Safari & Swahili Coast

Explore the remote and quiet southern Tanzania on safari before heading off to the beach at beautiful and tranquil Ras Kutani.

This is an incredible safari holiday for those looking to get off the beaten track. Selous is much wilder and more remote than the game reserves of Northern Tanzania and you are unlikely to see many other visitors when out on your game drives.

The game is diverse and you will get the chance to spot the Big Five as well as a variety of other herbivores, predators and wildlife. You might even get the chance to see the very endangered and rare African Wild Dog if you are extremely lucky.

Ras Kutani’s keynote is relaxation, escape the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in the peaceful sanctuary but for those wanting to drag themselves away from their sun lounger, they do offer beachside activities. Head to the spa for a rejuvenating massage, or try boogie boarding, kayaking on the lagoon, venture for a forest or beach walk, snorkel around the shore side shipwreck or visit the local village. They are also lucky enough to host turtles, who lay their nests on the white sand beach, so guests may have the opportunity to watch hatchlings during the months of June to August.

The Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects. Partners include Save the Elephants, Save the Rhino, The Sheldrick Trust, Rhino Conservation Botswana and Animals saving Animals. You can find out more on our Conservation pages. On behalf of every client travelling, Real Africa makes a donation to the Trust. Our aim is to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and to promote sustainable, socially responsible travel which benefits the wildlife and communities you choose to visit.

DAY 2 - 4

After an early morning breakfast check out. Our representative will meet you and will transfer you to Dar es Salaam International Airport arriving in time to check-in for your flight to Selous. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your safari camp in Selous. The Selous Reserve is the largest in Africa, spanning 55,000km² and is four times larger than the Serengeti. Due to the local topography around Siwandu, the location is considered the undisputed prime position for superlative game viewing. Selous has more than half of Tanzania’s elephant population, over 120,000 buffalos, and both the 40,000 hippo and 4,000 lion in the reserve are probably the largest populations on the continent. Selous is also home to the planet’s largest population of rare wild dogs; giving guests an opportunity to glimpse all of these exotic animals in true unspoilt landscape. Siwandu Camp is a 10-minute game drive from the airstrip and is located in a grove of palms on the shore of Lake Nzerakera. As well as ensuring a stunning backdrop for the camp, this lakeshore location offers a consistency of game viewing as the animals gravitate around the lake and is the only place in East Africa where you can experience water-based game activities.

DAY 5 - 8

Ras Kutani
This morning you will check out and fly directly to Ras Kutani on the Indian Ocean coast. On arrival you will be met and transferred to this lovely beach resort. Ras Kutani is a very peaceful lodge built overlooking a small lagoon and long white sandy beach. Small sandy paths lead through the coastal forest to fifteen pretty cottages. Constructed of wood and makuti thatch they have a very natural feel to them. Some rooms overlook the beach, others sit on the edge of the lagoon and the suites and family room are further up the hill with stunning views of the turquoise ocean. Food is very good at Ras Kutani and the chefs pride themselves on fabulous seafood dishes. Ras Kutani is an ideal place for really relaxing. However, if you would like to be a little more active, you can ramble along nature trails or along the beach or take one of the lodge's kayaks for a paddle in the lagoon.
