Ultimate Safari, Rovos Rail, Cape Town and the Winelands

This is a fabulous once-in-a-lifetime tour for those looking to experience the best South Africa has to offer. You start in the Madikwe Game Reserve which offers excellent game viewing. As well as the fabled Big Five you also have the chance to see one of Africa's most endangered species - the African Wild Dog. Thanks to conservation efforts at Madikwe there is now a thriving population. You then head off on a 2 night/3 day luxury train trip with Rovos Rail. Travelling from Pretoria down to Cape Town in luxurious wood panelled cabins you can enjoy the stunning scenery whilst relaxing letting someone else take the strain. Rovos is famous for its fine dining and excellent service so you will be thoroughly spoilt. In Cape Town you have a couple of days to relax at your luxury hotel, the Cape Grace, which sits right on the Waterfront or you can explore all the delights that Cape Town has to offer. Finally you head to the beautiful Winelands full of quaint towns, gorgeous scenery, world class restaurants and of course plenty of vineyards.

The Real World Conservation Trust (formerly Real Africa Trust) works with leading conservation organisations to raise awareness as well as raising funds for specific projects. Partners include Save the Elephants, Save the Rhino, The Sheldrick Trust, Rhino Conservation Botswana and Animals saving Animals. You can find out more on our Conservation pages. On behalf of every client travelling, Real Africa makes a donation to the Trust. Our aim is to raise awareness about the plight of endangered species and to promote sustainable, socially responsible travel which benefits the wildlife and communities you choose to visit.

Safari Itinerary

DAY 1 - 3

Madike Game Reserve
On arrival at Johannesburg International Airport our representative will meet you and transfer you by road to Tuningi Safari Lodge. On arrival at Tuningi Safari Lodge, check-in and relax before afternoon tea. After tea you will enjoy your first afternoon/evening game drive. You will return to the Lodge in time for dinner. The malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, with its diverse landscapes and abundance of animals, is a special destination for a safari. The Big 5 is represented in the park and you are likely to spot a lion, leopard, elephant, rhino or buffalo during your stay. During your visit you will also have the rare privilege of possibly seeing the highly endangered African Wild Dog. Madikwe Game Reserve’s conservation efforts to protect the ‘painted dog’ are in place to help conserve this majestic diminishing species. Day visitors are not allowed in the park, so the number of vehicles in the park during game-drive hours is limited to the lodges’ vehicles, which makes Madikwe a very exclusive safari destination. You spend the next couple of days enjoying twice daily game drives in the reserve with your expert guides helping you get the most from your safari.

DAY 4 - 5

Rovos Rail
After your early morning game drive and breakfast, our representative will transfer you to Pretoria, arriving in time to check-in for your train journey to Cape Town. This 1,600-kilometre meander is a perfect illustration of South Africa as a world in one country. Travel the grasslands of the gold-rich Highveld to the haunting barrenness of the Great Karoo; trundle through the spectacular mountain ranges and scenic winelands of the Cape. Journey’s end is Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa, cradled by the imposing bulk of Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head. Highlights of the north- and southbound routes include a visit to the historic village of Matjiesfontein; this authentic perfectly preserved Victorian Village – founded by Mr Logan as a refreshment stop in 1890 – also boasts an impressive museum on the platform. Another stop is made in Kimberley providing an opportunity to enjoy a city tour and a visit to the Diamond Mine Museum. The train itself is a truly wonderful experience. You step back in time to enjoy the classic wood-panelled cabins, impeccable service and fine dining as you travel through some of South Africa's finest scenery. It's a fabulous way to arrive into Cape Town and if you've ever been on the Orient Express you'll know what to expect.

DAY 6 - 9

Cape Town
You spend your last day on board the train passing through Worcester to the historical village of Matjiesfontein. Lunch and tea are taken on board the train before arriving in Cape Town around 6pm. On arrival at Cape Town Station, you will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel in Cape Town. You have several days to enjoy Cape Town and its surroundings. The Cape Grace is in the heart of the vibrant waterfront area so you are in a great location for restaurants, galleries, shops and bars. If you wish to explore further afield you can go whale watching or visit Robben Island, hike up Table Mountain or visit the penguins at Boulders Bay or just relax on one the fabulous beaches.
