If you’re as passionate about Wildlife & Conservation as we are, then Ol Pejeta Conservancy is the perfect place to visit.When one of the Young Explorers our charity Explorers Against Extinction sponsored started their epic cycle ride from Kenya to Cape Town, it was at Ol Pejeta they started. Jack still countsit as a highlight of the trip.
This private wildlife conservancy, situated on the equator with Mount Kenya as its backdrop, covers over 90,000 acres and is the largest black rhino sanctuary in east Africa. With conservation at its forefront, Ol Pejeta ensures the protection of existing rhino, elephant, and other wildlife, in addition to the 300-acre chimpanzee sanctuary established to rehabilitate animals rescued from the black market.
Offering unique experiences and something for every budget, there are nine tented camps, lodges, and homestays to choose from:
Kicheche Laikipia Camp is an eco-camp overlooking a waterhole and comprising of just six luxurious tents offering en-suite bathrooms with flushing toilets and hot showers. A family tent is also available which sleeps up to 4 guests.
Mutara Camp is the only accommodation in the 20,000-acre Mutara Conservancy which borders Ol Pejeta. This camp comprises 15 tents, all providing cosey interiors with ensuite facilities, fully stocked mini-bar and a private deck.
Ol Pejeta Bush Camp lies on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River and is an excellent base from which to explore. Having seven tents and accommodating a maximum of 12 guests, this camp can also be booked exclusively for a family or group. Each tent has ensuite facilities with flushing toilet and hot water bucket showers.
Ol Pejeta House is a beautiful private house within the conservancy. This picturesque ranch offers four rooms in the main house, with a further two rooms in Buffalo Cottage which is sited in an exclusive garden and separate from the main house.
Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages lie in Ol Pejeta’s southern wilderness area and offer views across a river valley to the plains beyond. In the cottages, guests enjoy a full complement of staff including private chef, housekeeper, waiter, grounds-keeper, and night askari’s (guards). The cottages are environmentally friendly with solar power and lighting.
Pelican House offers comfortable accommodation with the option of self-catering or full board. The house accommodates eight guests but can sleep 12 on request. Pelican House is located in the east of the conservancy and overlooks the Pelican Dam which is often visited by a variety of wildlife.
Porini Rhino Camp is on the banks of a seasonal river in a secluded valley. The camp comprises of seven spacious tents with beautiful views. Each tent is comfortably furnished and offers ensuite bathrooms with flushing toilet and safari shower. This camp prides itself on a low carbon footprint, and focusses on conservation as well as benefitting the local communities, all whilst providing guests with an authentic safari experience away from the crowds.
Sweetwaters Serena Camp is one of the larger camps consisting of 50 luxurious appointed tents. Each tent has an ensuite bathroom, and veranda with views of the waterhole and a backdrop of Mt. Kenya.
The Stables offers basic but comfortable accommodation facilities for those on a tight budget. Each room has a single bed with mosquito net, clothes hangar, power socket, chair, and laundry basket. Bathrooms are shared at the Stables. The Stables runs on generator power only, so you’ll need to bring a torch.
From bush walks to night game drives, and cycling safaris to lion tracking, your days here will be both fulfilling and memorable. Children are welcomed too and you’ll find loads of activities for them, such as playing hide-and-seek with the Ol Pejeta anti-poaching dogs. Many activities also have a conservation element, teaching children about the threats facing wildlife and ecosystems across Kenya and beyond, and what they can do to help.
