Wild dogs are one of the rarest animals to be seen on safari, rarer than leopards and even rhino. They are shy and elusive, and have been hunted to the very edge of extinction making them very wary of man.
That’s why it was big news when one of our guides recently took this photo in Tsavo National Park in Kenya. He had never seen them in the wild before, and for a guide to get his camera out it must be something very special.
They live in packs of up to 20 or so animals, and similar to zebras, no two ever have exactly the same markings. Despite their small size, they are one of the most efficient predators in Africa. Able to run at 35 mph for long distances they wear their prey down, snapping at it until it suffers a bad injury, or collapses from blood-loss or exhaustion.
