Marabou Stork

As a wader it lives in sub-Saharan Africa in both wet and arid habitats such as the savannah. It is enormous as it can be up to 1.5 metres tall and weigh as much as 9 kilos which is a lot for a flying bird. A wingspan of 3.7 metres has been recorded which is an incredible 12 feet!

Although they belong to the stork family and nest in trees, they have become rather notorious in their habits and they are much more like vultures. They too feed off mainly carrion, small animals, and sometimes even human rubbish!

Africa is a fantastic place for birdwatchers - please see our Blog for more details.
